I realize that there is so much that we collectively, and I specifically, do not yet understand about the development of the brain. And often, what we do know from the latest neuroscience findings is not yet ready to translate into suggestions for parents; the information is sometimes still at a theoretical stage or the level of the research about a particular topic is too small (looking at the neuronal, cellular level) or too large (looking at how traditions in various impact language usage). In this book, I have relied heavily on what I’ve learned as a teacher of young children, on my experiences in trying to prepare others to become teachers through university training, and on my experiences as a mum who, because of the unique challenges presented by Jenny, learned to pay very, very close to how my children (both of them) learned.
